Boeing wins out in XLUUV race

18 February 2019

Boeing has been selected to develop and manufacture a new class of Extra Large Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (XLUUV) for the US Navy (USN), edging out competition from Lockheed Martin.

Designed to be deployed from a shore base or a host amphibious ship platform, the Orca XLUUV is an accelerated acquisition effort developed in response to a Joint Emergent Operational Need in the Pacific theatre. The USN has stipulated that the XLUUV adopts a modular, open architecture design, with the core vehicle providing guidance and control, navigation, autonomy, situational awareness, core communications, power distribution, energy and power, propulsion and manoeuvring, and mission sensors.
