India to privatise army workshops under GoCo plan

15 February 2019

India is pushing ahead with the privatisation of Indian Army maintenance facilities through a proposed government-owned, contractor-operated (GoCo) model, India's minister of state for defence, Subhash Bhamre, confirmed in parliament on 13 February.

Bhamre said the government planned to "corporatise" eight Indian Army workshops through GoCo as well as close two "advance-base workshops", one "static workshop" and four ordnance depots. He added, "The decisions have been taken in the overall interest of the army and the nation."

Bhamre confirmed that the closures were recommended by a committee set up by the government to enhance combat capability and "rebalance" defence expenditure.
