Facilities for IAF’s new Chinook helos to be ready in March 2021, says CAG

15 February 2019

The facilities to accommodate 15 Boeing CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift helicopters on order for the Indian Air Force (IAF) at a base in northern India will not be operational until all platform deliveries have been completed, the country’s Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has revealed.

“The infrastructure would not be available at the [IAF] station until March 2021 for induction of the heavy-lift helicopter squadron,” the CAG stated in a report tabled in parliament on 13 February. Delivery of the platforms is expected to be completed a year earlier, according to Boeing.

The CAG disclosed that the necessary infrastructure work to house the Chinooks has yet to commence, even though the Ministry of Defence (MoD) approved the INR14.59 billion (USD20.5 million) project about 12 months ago.
