UK Royal Marines to exercise in Sweden

14 February 2019

Royal Marine Commando units are to train in Sweden in March in the first ever major exercise by UK combat units in the Scandinavian country.

More than 800 UK personnel, under the command of 40 Commando Royal Marines, are to join the Swedish-run Exercise 'Northern Wind' in the northeast of the country.

A Royal Navy spokesman told Jane's that the UK contingent is currently deployed in northern Norway for Arctic warfare training around Bardufoss air station. "Exercise 'Aquila' is a mountain and cold weather warfare training exercise ahead of Exercise 'Viking Warrior' and Exercise 'Reindeer' alongside the Norwegian Army and US Marine Corps at the end of February and beginning of March," the spokesman told Jane's on 13 February.
