On 8 February, Turkey’s Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB) signed a contract with local business partners STM, Havelsan, Aselsan, and Asfat on the mid-life upgrade of four Preveze-class (Type 209/1400) submarines.
The modernised submarines will return to service in 2023–27.
Aselsan’s share in the project is TRY512.3 million (USD97.3 million), according to the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP).
The SSB said in an 8 February press release that the modernisation would upgrade the submarines’ existing systems to give them new operational capabilities. This includes the mid-life upgrade of the submarines’ sensors and weapon systems, which have reached the end of their technological and economic life cycles.
