IAF in talks with Russia for emergency MiG-29 purchase

13 February 2019

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is in advanced negotiations with Russia to procure additional MiG-29 'Fulcrum' fighters to augment its rapidly declining combat aircraft fleet, which is facing the imminent retirement of several legacy platforms as well as recurring accidents.

Official sources told Jane's on 13 February that the IAF had conducted "extended discussions" with Russian officials in January concerning the intended purchase of 21 second-hand MiG-29s for a total of about INR60 billion (USD850 million). The proposed price includes the cost of related weapon systems as well as of training and other support equipment required to form a new fighter squadron.
