Ukraine’s constitutional amendments on future NATO and EU accession reduce likelihood of Donbass conflict resolution

12 February 2019

On 7 February 2019 the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, voted 334-35 in favour of the adoption of constitutional amendments that incorporated the objectives of Ukraine's European Union (EU) integration and accession to NATO.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who proposed these constitutional amendments in September 2018, is expected to sign these changes to the Ukrainian constitution promptly. According to a January 2019 opinion poll by Rating pollster, 50% of Ukrainians supported their country's integration into the EU, and 46% would have voted in favour of NATO accession if a referendum was held.
