Afghan helo crashes, claimed shot down by Taliban
Gareth Jennings, London - Jane's Defence Weekly
11 February 2019
An Afghan Air Force (AAF) light attack and scout helicopter crashed in the central Wardak district of the country on 8 February.
Images posted online showed the MD Helicopter Inc MD 530F Cayuse Warrior (named ‘Jengi’ in AAF service) as being heavily damaged but essentially in one piece following the incident that occurred in a remote snow-covered region of the country.
While neither the Afghan government nor the 438th Air Expeditionary Wing (AEW) have commented, the Taliban claimed that it shot the helicopter down and killed the two crew members. Images of the crash site in the aftermath showed the wrecked helicopter (serial 225) being examined by Afghan men in civilian clothing but carrying no visible weaponry.
