In a departure from previous naval roadmaps, the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) has placed an emphasis on the North Pole and the role it plays in South Korea's maritime security in its latest strategy paper.
The '2045 Vision' roadmap lays out plans for the RoKN's expected area of operations, and anticipated fleet strength over the next three decades.
Speaking to Jane's in January, an RoKN source said the service is looking to expand its operational areas to now include the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea, which lie on its routes to the North Pole.
Besides expanding its operational areas, 'Vision 2045' will also see the induction of more capable surface and sub-surface combatants, including new variants of the KSS-III submarine and the KDX-3 destroyer.
