US Navy CNO touts confidence in carrier Ford’s weapons elevators fixes

06 February 2019

US chief of naval operations (CNO) Admiral John Richardson said he has "a high level of confidence" that contractors have "gotten through technical matters" of fixing issues related to the Advanced Weapons Elevators on USS Gerald R Ford (CVN 78).

"Now, it's just a matter of getting through installation," Adm Richardson told reporters during a briefing on board the aircraft carrier on 5 February. "We're moving elevator by elevator," he said, adding the next elevator is due to be delivered to the ship's crew this month.

The elevators have been the subject of concern for several months. In its annual report released 31 January the Pentagon's Director of Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E's) noted problems with the elevators, as well as overall sortie generations and reliability issues for equipment associated with aircraft operations.
