The Greek Ministry of Merchant Marine and Island Policy, on behalf of the Hellenic Coast Guard, signed a EUR42 million (USD48 million) contract with Italian shipbuilder Cantiere Navale Vittoria for the supply of three patrol boats on 23 January.
The acquisition, which includes an option of a fourth boat, received 90% of its funding from the EU’s Frontex border agency.
The vessels are planned to be delivered by 2020 and will be assigned for four months per year to Frontex missions outside Greek waters.
Displacing 160 tonnes, the vessels will have an overall length of 37 m, a top speed of 37 kt, and a range of 1,000 n miles at 29 kt.
