The US Navy (USN) is looking to equip the Northrop Grumman E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft with an upgraded satellite communications (satcom) suite.
The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) announced on 24 January that it intends to award Northrop Grumman a sole-source contract to undertake a technical study on the feasibility of fitting both dual satcom channels of the carrier-borne AEW aircraft with the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS). Work is to take place between August 2019 and May 2020, with nine one-year options to extend the term of the contract.
As noted by Jane’s C4ISR & Mission Systems: Maritime , the MUOS is a next-generation narrowband tactical satcom system developed by Lockheed Martin Space Systems to significantly improve communications for mobile US forces.
