Philippines confirms Spyder procurement plan

25 January 2019

Philippines Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana has confirmed that the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will procure from Israel the Spyder self-propelled surface-to-air missile (SAM) system made by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.

In comments to the state-run Philippine News Agency on 24 January, Lorenzana indicated that the procurement is currently being processed by the Department of National Defense (DND). He added that the number of Spyder systems that the Philippines planned to procure had not yet been finalised.

Speaking to Jane's in 2018, Philippines defence officials indicated that the DND had been discussing the potential procurement of the Spyder system with the Israeli government, but a deal had not been concluded.
