India’s OFB hands over indigenous assault rifles to paramilitary BSF

24 January 2019

India's state-owned Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) handed over its indigenously developed Tiruchi Assault Rifle (TAR) to the country's paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) on 20 January.

Officials said that the TAR, which is chambered for the 7.62×39 mm round, has cyclic rate of fire of up to 600 rounds a minute, and is effective to a range of 300 m, can also be fitted with a 40 mm UBGL-M6 under-barrel grenade launcher.

However, for production of the TAR to be financially viable, OFB officials said the weapon also needs to be procured by the Indian Army (IA) in large numbers.
