Saab’s Seaeye Cougar XT selected for New Zealand’s future hydrography ship

23 January 2019

The Royal New Zealand Navy’s (RNZN) new hydrographic and diving support vessel, the future HMNZS Manawanui , will be equipped with the Seaeye Cougar XT underwater robotic vehicle.

Norway-based Østensjø Rederi, which has been contracted by New Zealand’s Ministry of Defence to deliver the ship with an integrated remotely operated vehicle (ROV), has selected the system from Saab.

The Cougar XT is propelled by six thrusters and can carry out light intervention and construction works, in addition to performing underwater observations.

It will be modified to carry three video cameras, a sonar system, a tether management system, and three separate tool skids with manipulators, cutters, and water jetting systems.
