Taiwan's Executive Yuan has approved national defence industry guidelines intended to spur indigenous capability and reduce dependency on imports.
The Executive Yuan's press office said the 'Defense Industry Development Regulations' were passed on 17 January and have now been sent to the Legislative Yuan for approval and enactment. The regulations were proposed by the Ministry of National Defense (MND) in 2018.
Both the Executive Yuan and Legislative Yuan are branches of the Taiwan government.
In a statement, the Executive Yuan's press office said the new policy is required to provide a "legal basis" for defence-industrial development in the country. It added that the guidelines will create a "sustainable development environment" for the national defence industry and will help "achieve the goal of combining national defence construction and economic development".
