Leonardo DRS won the contract recently to provide the hybrid electric drive system for the US Coast Guard (USCG) second Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) and the company sees the deal as potential door-opener for future US Navy (USN) work.
Under the contract awarded by USCG OPC prime contractor Eastern Shipbuilding, Leonardo DRS will provide its permanent magnet motor-based Auxiliary Propulsion System for the ship.
The integrated hybrid electric drive system enables the ship to operate more efficiently at slower speeds, increases mission duration capability, reduces emissions, and provides emergency "take-home" capability in the event of a failure of the main propulsion diesel engines.
