The US Air Force has introduced a number of changes to the way it supports the collaboration between small businesses and research institutions in an attempt to encourage interest in the development of new technologies.
The service is modifying its Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) programmes, which will include more interaction with the various stakeholders, specifically with regards to the STTR initiative.
STTR involves small businesses partnering with a research institution and typically represents less than 25% of the total SBIR/STTR areas covered in the US military’s Broad Agency Announcements.
This means that they are often overlooked as a commercial opportunity, and this low commercialisation rate prevents their evolution into usable technology, the USAF said.
