China's missile-force improvements, highlighted in a recent Pentagon report, have caused the US Navy's leaders to reassess Chinese capability.
"It changes your calculations," Admiral Bill Moran, US vice chief of naval operations, said during a media briefing on 15 January at the Surface Navy 2019 symposium.
At the same time, though, Adm Moran acknowledged had not yet seen the report in it and was unclear about what capability was being assessed.
It would make a difference, for example, if the assessment reflected the performance of the weapon, or the performance of sensor.
"It comes down to speed and range," he said.
The report, "China Military Power, Modernizing a Force to Fight and Win", was released on 15 January by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).
