Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a rare admission on 13 January when he confirmed that Israel had carried out strikes against Iranian targets in Syria.
“Just in the last 36 hours the air force attacked Iranian warehouses with Iranian weapons at the international airport in Damascus,” he said at the start of a cabinet meeting. “The accumulation of recent attacks proves that we are determined more than ever to take action against Iran in Syria, just as we promised.”
The official Syrian Arab News Agency cited a military source as saying that Israeli aircraft had launched several missiles at targets near Damascus, but most were intercepted by Syrian air defences, with only an ammunition storage warehouse at the international airport being damaged.
