The Japan Coast Guard (JCG) plans to deploy five more large patrol vessels in 2019 to bolster its present fleet of 62 at-sea boats.

The additional deployment will consist of one 6,500-tonne, two 6,000-tonne, one 3,500-tonne, and one 1,500-tonne patrol vessels.

The 6,500- and 6,000-tonne vessels will be helicopter-capable, a JCG spokesperson told Jane’s on 11 January.

According to JCG officials, the deployment seeks to address the growing need to monitor the seas surrounding Japan.

The cabinet of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has approved a budget of JPY217.8 billion (USD2 billion) for the JCG for fiscal year 2019.
