Seoul, Tokyo continue trading accusations following MPA, destroyer encounter

09 January 2019

Defence relations between Japan and South Korea have deteriorated further in the wake of an incident involving a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Kawasaki P-1 maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) and a Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) destroyer.

Tokyo has accused an RoKN destroyer Gwang Gae To Daewang (971) of directing its fire-control radar at a JMSDF Kawasaki P-1 MPA on 20 December 2018 while both assets were deployed in the Sea of Japan (East Sea).

Seoul has denied the claims, but Japanese Defence Minister Takeshi Iwaya now insists that the JMSDF has succeeded in recording emission data from the South Korean destroyer's STIR 180 fire-control radar.
