The Indian Air Force (IAF) will begin receiving the first of five Russian-made Almaz-Antei S-400 Triumf self-propelled surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems from October 2020, Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre told parliament on 2 January.
Delivery of the four remaining systems will be completed by April 2023, the minister said in response to a question by an opposition MP.
The S-400 air-defence systems, the contract for which was signed with Moscow on 5 October 2018, will provide India with “capable air-defence coverage to vulnerable areas and vulnerable points”, Bhamre added.
The minister also downplayed the likelihood of Washington sanctioning New Delhi for the purchase under the former’s Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), which is designed to prevent countries from buying materiel from Moscow.
