The Brazilian Navy is to acquire three Eurocopter EC135 T3 twin-engine helicopters from Helicópteros do Brasil (Helibras), Jane’s was told on 20 December.
These helicopters will replace Eurocopter AS355F2 (now Airbus Helicopters H125 Fennec) platforms of 1st General Purpose Helicopters Squadron ‘Águia’ (HU-1), which operates from São Pedro da Aldeia Naval Air Base.
No additional details were provided at this stage.
A total of eight Fennecs (designated UH-13 in Brazil) are believed to be in service. The type will reach the end of its service life in 2020, the navy said.
EC135 T3 is the previous commercial designation for current Airbus Helicopters H135 civilian helicopter, indicating that Brazil may acquire secondhand EC135 T3s instead of newbuild H135s or its military variant H135M.
