The Hungarian Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract with Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) on 19 December to buy 44 Leopard 2A7+ main battle tanks (MBTs) and 24 new Panzerhaubitze (PzH) 2000 self-propelled howitzers (SPHs) for more than HUF160 billion (USD565 million).
KMW said in a 20 December press release that Hungary is also buying 12 second-hand Leopard 2A4s for training purposes. Hungarian MoD sources said first deliveries would take place no earlier than 2020.
The new armoured vehicles are suitable for conventional as well as asymmetric warfare, the MoD said. Before the contract signing, Hungarian Defence Minister Tibor Benkő met KMW CEO Frank Haun, who was visiting Hungary.
