Canada details antenna upgrade for Halifax-class ship radars

14 December 2018

The Canadian government has signed a CAD21.7 million (USD16.2 million) contract on 7 December with Saab Microwave Canada for a new antenna for the Sea Giraffe 180 (SG-180) radar installed on the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN) Halifax-class frigates.

Saab Microwave Canada will install a new electronically stabilised antenna set on HMCS St John in early 2021 when the ship is due to be undergoing routine maintenance, according to the deal. The contract is awarded under a performance-evaluation approach: the performance of the antenna will be reviewed and approved before any additional sets could be procured for the remainder of the class.
