HHI awarded contract to build final two FFX-II frigates for RoKN

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has been awarded a KRW633.5 billion (USD563 million) contract for the construction of the final two Daegu (FFX-II)-class guided-missile frigates for the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN), the company announced on 13 December.

Construction of the 122 m-long frigates, which are now the seventh and eighth of the class on order for the service, will begin in the second half of 2020, with delivery to the RoKN expected to take place in 2023, according to HHI.

The announcement comes about a month after South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) announced that it had been awarded a KRW631.5 billion contract to build the fifth and sixth frigates of the class.

The contract awards come after first-of-class Daegu (with pennant number 818) was handed over to the RoKN on 1 February in a ceremony held at the DSME's Okpo shipyard on Geoje Island.

The FFX-II class is a larger variant of South Korea's six Incheon (FFX-I)-class ships, the first of which entered service in 2013.

The FFX-II class has an overall beam of 14 m, a standard displacement of 2,800 tonnes, and a full-load displacement of 3,650 tonnes. Each ship of the class is powered by one Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine engine and two Leonardo DRS permanent magnet motors driven by MTU 12 V 4000 diesel-generator sets in a combined diesel-electric or gas (CODLOG) configuration. Each of the ships can attain a maximum speed of 30 kt.

The FFX-II class is armed with one 127 mm MK 45 MOD 4 naval gun and one Raytheon six-barrelled 20 mm Phalanx close-in weapon system mounted on the top of the aft superstructure.

It also features a 16-cell Korean vertical launching system for surface-to-air missiles and anti-submarine rockets.
