High turnover of incumbents in Bahrain parliamentary elections likely to facilitate austerity reforms, violent opposition protests unlikely

Bahrain held parliamentary and municipal elections on 24 November and 1 December.

There was no functional political opposition taking part; the Shia Islamist group al-Wefaq and the secular Waad parties had been banned from taking part and called for a general boycott. At final count, only three incumbent parliamentary members were returned to the 40-member seat Council of Representatives (CoR). The outgoing prime minister, Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa, was reappointed, with the only cabinet change being the appointment of Salman bin Khalifa al-Khalifa as finance minister.
