Last Zumwalt-class ship launched as USN considers fate of destroyers’ guns

11 December 2018

The third and final planned Zumwalt-class guided-missile destroyer Lyndon B Johnson was launched on 9 December at General Dynamics' Bath Iron Works (BIW) shipyard.

Second ship Michael Monsoor , meanwhile, departed BIW on 9 November for Coronado, California, where it will be commissioned into service on 26 January 2019. After that, the ship is scheduled to start its post-delivery availability and combat systems activation, as well as testing and trials.

First-of-class USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) has been on the US West Coast for about a year, undergoing combat system activation and testing.

Part of the destroyers' combat system testing and certification includes intensive refitting for their new surface-attack role.
