Germany plans to deploy H145M helicopters to Afghanistan in 2021

06 December 2018

The Generalinspekteur der Bundeswehr (Germany's chief of defence staff), General Eberhard Zorn, decided in November that the Luftwaffe's CH-53 medium transport helicopters participating in NATO's ‘Resolute Support’ mission will be relieved by NH90s and H145M helicopters, according to the Luftwaffe website.

The four CH-53s will be relieved by three NH90s and a single H145M Light Utility Helicopter Special Operations Forces (LUH SOF). The latter will provide armed escort of NH90s during medical evacuation missions. Like the CH-53s, the helicopters will be based in Masar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan.

The NH90s and H145M will be deployed to Afghanistan for 18 months and the decision on how to proceed afterwards will be decided in the New Year, the Luftwaffe said.
