US Navy takes delivery of LCS anti-submarine DART system

The US Navy (USN) has taken delivery of the Raytheon-developed Dual-mode Array Transmitter (DART) Mission System for the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) anti-submarine (ASW) mission package.

The USN took delivery of DART, the final component of the LCS ASW mission package on 30 November, after the system passed acceptance tests at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute.

The USN says the DART system will greatly improve ASW capabilities, providing the ability to manoeuvre active and passive sonar systems above and below the thermocline layer and helping surface-ship crews overcome one of the greatest challenges in ASW.

With the acceptance of the DART pre-production test article, the USN plans to embark the system on an available and suitable craft and transit to the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center for an in-water demonstration of the of the LCS ASW Mission Package’s Escort Mission Module prior to formal developmental testing on USS Fort Worth (LCS 3).
