A new US Government Accountability Office (GAO) report has highlighted there is no immediate concern about military threats in the Arctic region by the Pentagon and the US Navy (USN).
According to recent assessments, the Arctic threat level remains low and the Department of Defense (DoD) has the capabilities required to execute its 2016 Arctic Strategy, the GAO said in its November report.
The GAO noted that the USN's 25 June 2018 report on naval capabilities in the Arctic region closely aligned with the DoD's assessment that there is a low level of military threat in the Arctic.
"The June [USN] 2018 report also aligns with assessments of Arctic capabilities and gaps in the navy's 2014 roadmap for implementing the strategy," the GAO report noted.
