The US Navy (USN) will make sure it does not put itself at a disadvantage in the Arctic in relation to Russian and Chinese forces, Vice Admiral Andrew ‘Woody’ Lewis, US 2nd Fleet commander, said.
“We haven’t ceded anything to the Chinese or anybody else,” Vice Adm Lewis said on 28 November at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
However, he acknowledged that the USN had created a difficult situation for itself in the Western Pacific in dealing with Chinese forces there. “We’ve put ourselves at a disadvantage in which we now have to regain the advantage,” he said.
