South Korea will procure additional Elta Systems EL/M-2080 ‘Green Pine’ early-warning radar systems to enhance surveillance capability, the country’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced on 27 November.

DAPA said in a statement that the acquisition – valued at about KRW330 billion (USD292 million) – will feature two Block-C versions of the radar system to boost capability to “detect and track ballistic missiles from a long distance at an early stage”.

DAPA added that it has “deliberated and verified” the decision and will now proceed with the procurement. Deliveries are scheduled for the early 2020s.

Elta Systems, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), delivered two Block-B versions of Green Pine to the Republic of Korea Air Force (RoKAF) in 2012 in a contract worth USD200 million.
