BAE Systems has been awarded a USD9.2 million contract from the US Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) to develop new, data-driven machine-learning algorithms that will be used to provide situational awareness of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum.

The goal of DARPA's Radio Frequency Machine Learning System (RFMLS) programme is to develop a system to see and understand the RF spectrum and address some of the challenges that are at the forefront of the RF domain. It will focus on challenges that are not necessarily present in many other domains that machine learning is being applied to, Scott Kuzdeba, principal investigator for BAE Systems RFMLS programme, told Jane's .
