The incoming Brazilian defence minister, Army Reserve General Fernando Azevedo e Silva, announced the country’s new military chiefs on 21 November. Gen Fernando was announced as next defence minister by President-elect Jair Messias Bolsonaro on 13 November.
The general chose General Edson Leal Pujol, head of the Department of Science and Technology, for the army; Fleet Admiral Ilques Barbosa Júnior, the Chief of the Naval Staff, for the navy; and Lieutenant-Brigadier Antônio Carlos Moretti Bermudez, the General Commander of Personnel, for the air force.
The new chiefs will replace General Eduardo Villas Bôas (army), Fleet Admiral Eduardo Bacellar Leal Ferreira (navy), and Lieutenant-Brigadier Nivaldo Luiz Rossato (air force) from 1 January 2019.
