UK MoD awards infrastructure contract to prepare RAF Lakenheath for US F-35s

20 November 2018

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on its website on 19 November that it had awarded Kier VolkerFitzpatrick a GBP160 million (USD205 million) contract to prepare Royal Air Force (RAF) Lakenheath airbase for two US F-35 squadrons.

The contract covers the construction of a flight simulator facility, maintenance unit, new hangars, and storage facilities. It will be possible to link the simulator to other simulators in the UK and elsewhere, enabling US and RAF F-35 pilots to train together, the MoD said.

Building work at the base is scheduled to begin during the summer of 2019, so the first F-35s can be received in 2021.
