Ecuadorian Navy receives two modernised Corvettes

16 November 2018

The Ecuadorian Navy received corvettes Manabi (CM 12) and Loja (CM 16) from the state-run shipyard Astilleros Navales Ecuatorianos (ASTINAVE) on 15 November, following extensive modernisation of the ships.

ASTINAVE's Project Jupiter included upgrades to three Esmeralda-class corvettes. The first one, Los Rios (CM 13), was delivered in July 2018, and afterward the vessel took part in the multinational exercise 'UNITAS' in Colombian waters during September.

All three corvettes have received the domestically manufactured Orion combat system, the navy said. The navy estimated the total cost for the project, which commenced in 2014, at USD71 million for all three ships.
