Turkey will begin preparations for the deployment of S-400 surface-to-air missile systems in October 2019. US and NATO concerns about the purchase of the missiles from Russia are baseless as they will operate independently, Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said on 25 October.
In an interview with the Turkish state-run Anatolia news agency, Akar said Turkish military personnel will be sent to Russia as of the beginning of 2019 for training on S-400s.
Drawing attention to serious air and missile threats against Turkey, Akar recalled that Turkey’s attempts to supply similar anti-ballistic missile systems, that is Patriots, from the United States had been unsuccessful in the past, so Turkey contracted non-NATO supplier Russia.
