Aegis-equipped SM-3 Block IIA successfully intercepts MRBM target in test

28 October 2018

A Raytheon Standard Missile (SM)-3 Block IIA missile fired from a US Navy (USN) guided-missile destroyer (DDG) equipped with an upgraded Lockheed Martin Aegis combat system successfully intercepted and “obliterated” a medium range ballistic missile (MRBM) target during a test on 26 October, US government and contractor officials reported.

The at-sea test was conducted off the coast of Hawaii by the USN and Missile Defense Agency (MDA) aboard USS John Finn (DDG 113), which is equipped with the latest evolution of the Aegis Baseline 9.C2 (BMD5.1). During the test, the Aegis Weapon System detected, tracked, engaged, and launched a missile to intercept an MRBM target, Lockheed Martin said in a statement.
