Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu detailed the development of the Central Military District (CMD), Southern Military District (SMD), and Eastern Military District (EMD) during a Ministry of Defence (MoD) board meeting on 10 October in Moscow.
“Each of the three districts receives up to 1,500 new and upgraded weapon systems a year. They will have an average of 50% modern weapons in service by the end of the year,” Shoigu said. He also reported that the districts were intensifying training. “Since 1 December 2017, the SMD, CMD, and EMD have held 1,832 tactical exercises, with the figure for the entire armed forces exceeding 4,000,” the minister said, adding that the training was being conducted in close co-operation with member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
