The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) is trialling a new corrosion-resistant coating on the hydraulic components of its first-of-class helicopter carrier HMAS Canberra (L 02), with the aim of reducing biofouling on the ship.
The trials are being conducted in collaboration with the Swinburne University of Technology, the Defence Materials Technology Centre, MacTaggart Scott Australia, United Surface Technologies, and the Defence Science and Technology Group.
Dr Richard Piola, from Defence Science and Technology, described the new surface coating as one that could make a huge difference to the RAN's operational availability and significantly reduce the cost of maintenance and repairs for the service.
