The proliferation of advanced Russian submarines combined with Kalibr missiles poses a greater threat to major European cities than its other naval platforms and weapons, the most senior US naval officer in Europe has warned.
Addressing the Atlantic Council in Washington on 5 October, Admiral James Foggo, commander of US Naval Forces Europe, said that while Russia has launched new classes of warships throughout European waters, the undersea force is what holds his attention.
“We’ve seen creation of new classes but I’m more concerned with submarine warfare,” he said.
The admiral specifically noted concern for the Project 677 Lada-class diesel-electric attack submarine.
