China cancels military talks with United States in protest over sanctions
Gabriel Dominguez, London - Jane's Defence Weekly
24 September 2018
China has cancelled military talks with the United States for the near future and summoned the US ambassador to Beijing in protest over Washington’s recent decision to impose sanctions on China’s defence procurement agency, the Equipment Development Department (EDD), following the latter’s acquisition of military equipment from Russia.
Citing a statement by the Ministry of National Defense (MND) in Beijing, the state-owned China Daily newspaper reported that China will postpone a 25-27 September meeting in Beijing on a communication mechanism for the joint staff departments of China and the United States.
It also pointed out that China would “immediately recall” People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Commander Vice Admiral Shen Jinlong, who was attending the 23rd International Seapower Symposium being held in the United States.
