Russian naval forces have launched a new series of exercises across the eastern Mediterranean in a move that could limit the ability of Israeli aircraft to strike at targets in Syria.
The Russian military issued a notice to airmen (NOTAMs) on 18 September closing off nine exercise areas of airspace above international waters off Syria, Lebanon, and to the west of Cyprus for “rocket firings” over eight days.
Five of the exercise areas run in a near continuous block of airspace from the northern limit of Syrian territorial waters, down along the coast of Lebanon, and ending south of the Israeli city Haifa, according to maps issued by the Cypriot Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre.
