Iran has built a new launch site for an S-300PMU-2 strategic surface-to-air missile (SAM) system at Mashhad airport in the northeast of the country, satellite imagery has revealed.
Constructed between May and July, the site is almost identical to the S-300PMU-2 base at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport, but has pads for only two launchers instead of the usual four.
This fits the recent deployment of a partial S-300PMU-2 battery to Mashhad airport three times since 2017, all of which coincided with visits to the city by Supreme Leader Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. For all those deployments the system was set up at the end of the taxiway and had two launchers, not four.
