IDF says Syrian military entirely responsible for downing Russian Il-20

19 September 2018

In response to Moscow's allegation that Israeli jets used the Il-20 that was shot down on 17 September as cover for an airstrike, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has blamed indiscriminate fire by Syrian air defence units for the loss of the Russian electronic intelligence aircraft.

In a rare admission that it carried out a specific airstrike in Syria, the IDF released a statement on 18 September saying its fighter jets had targeted a Syrian military facility in Latakia from where "systems to manufacture accurate and lethal weapons were about to be transferred on behalf of Iran to Hizbullah in Lebanon".
