USN starts programme for mine warfare instructors

19 September 2018

Acknowledging the growing importance of mine countermeasures (MCM) operations with the increasing focus on littoral missions, the Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC) has started a new Mine Warfare (MIW) Warfare Tactics Instructor (WTI) programme.

The new MIW WTI programme will join existing Amphibious Warfare (AMW), Anti-Submarine Warfare/Surface Warfare (ASW/SUW), and Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) WTI programmes led by SMWDC.

WTIs are now in great demand to help train ship surface-warfare officers and their teams. The SMWDC has been looking to establish an MIW WTI programme for some time to deal with global mine threats and help the USN maintain sea control, especially as the service continues to focus more on developing operational concepts in contested coastal areas.
