The US State Department has approved the sale of 60,500 120 mm rounds for Egypt’s M1A1 Abrams tanks, including the latest armoured-piercing, fin-stabilised, discarding-sabot tracer (APFSDS-T) munition, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 17 September.
It said the approval covered 10,000 rounds of the fourth-generation A4 kinetic energy tungsten (KE-W) APFSDS-T, 46,000 target practice rounds (M831A1 tracer and M865 discarding sabot tracer types), and 4,500 high-explosive tracer (HE-T) rounds.
The DSCA said Egypt would use the KE-W A4 rounds to replace its inventory of older KE-W A1 and A2 ammunition and the HE-T rounds “to maintain a strategic munitions inventory for its M1A1 tank fleet in support of operations against militants … in the Sinai”.
