Iraq’s Kurdish parliamentary election unlikely to stabilise regional governance; elevated risk of protests, terrorism during election period

There is a high likelihood of protests in cities across Iraqi Kurdistan, especially Sulaimaniya, ahead of the semi-autonomous region’s parliamentary elections scheduled for 30 September 2018.

The region spans three provinces: Dohuk, Erbil, and Sulaimaniya. A parliamentary majority bloc has already been assembled, as the dominant Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has entered an alliance with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) party.
